Know what you are buying!
Re most of the negative comments and ratings, I believe they are mostly from people who know little to nothing about violins and expect to get something playable right out of the box, like a harmonica or penny whistle. For this price, no one should expect that. EXPECT IT TO NEED SET UP, as this one does. My experience with this purchase has been very good. All pieces present and in good condition, although for a moment I thought there was no bridge included. However, it was wrapped up in a bit of paper that I had thought was just to protect the surface from getting scratched by the tail piece. There were a few raggedy wood fibers around the f holes, but an exacto knife took care of them. The bridge had been crudely shaped and the notches for the strings weren't deep enough, but again those were easily taken care of with a wood scraper and the exacto knife. A couple of horse hairs on the bow were broken, but that's to be expected. Looking closely at the instrument, it's apparent that the craftsmanship isn't top-tier, but for the price, it will do. Joints could have been better finished, i.e. sanded or better scraped, but then the price would be higher. The tuning pegs work fine--no excessive slippage. And if there were too much slippage, I would use peg compound before declaring the instrument hopeless. The bow is very cheap. I don't know what kind of wood it's made of, but it's definitely cheaper than Brazil wood. Still, it's functional at a basic level and a better bow is easy enough to find at a reasonable price. (I think everyone should have at least two bows, anyway.) I can't speak to the quality of the included rosin. I used my Kolstein rosin and the bow was properly rosinned in about five minutes. I'm amazed that the violin has a spruce belly and maple back and ribs. Those woods on their own put the sound ahead of the composite "wood" found in most VSOs (violin shaped objects). Compared with any professional grade violin, then yes, this isn't much more (if anything more) than a VSO; but this doesn't pretend to be a professional quality instrument. As a beginner's violin, this is quite adequate, and excellent for the price. EXPECT SET UP, and if you think it's beyond you to learn how to install the bridge, be willing to pay someone to do that for you, or find a neighbor or friend who's willing to do it for you. If you buy this knowing nothing about violins, be willing to EDUCATE yourself. YouTube can teach you what you need to know for free. Learn what the instrument needs. If you don't, your ignorance will likely lead you to decide it's totally worthless, when all it needs is a little knowledgeable TLC. This violin should be adequate for the first year or two of lessons. After that, you will be in a position to know exactly what kind of upgrade you need, and you won't have wasted a lot of $$ getting there.

Beautiful instrument and quality!
Violin looks beautiful and the quality is great for my 11 yr old daughter. She loves it! She learns to play on her own and in her orchestra class at school. Great value for everything that is included in this purchase. Comes with everything you need aside from the music book and stand. I highly recommend it.

Perfect for a beginner
It is exactly what I was looking for. A decent beginner instrument. For anyone who says the bridge is off center, they have it on backwards. For anyone who says the bridge keeps flying off..., no idea what you are doing. This item is definitely not a toy is is a decent beginning instrument for anyone wanting to learn to play the violin. It may not stay in tune at first, but the strings will need stretched, so just keep tuning it. If the pegs keep slipping some peg grease should do the trick. You can’t tune a string instrument then walk away and expect it to be in tune when you return. In all my years I have only come across one string instrument that you can do that with, but it is an extremely exceptional instrument.

Astonishing purchase.
This came in good packaging. The case for the violin is pretty good, nothing wrong with the zippers, it also has a little latch so it holds it even better. The violin itself has nothing wrong with it, it has good construction, good paint job and it can hold notes well. The bow was nice, nothing wrong with it except for the little yellow-orange stuff at the top which can be easily cleaned. There is a little pocket in the case for the rosin, the rosin worked on the bow pretty well, I was able to play in less than 5 minutes.Overall, I would say this is by-far one of the best purchases I've ever had on Amazon, it really out-did itself. It's an absolutely great deal for all these things, I would highly recommend you buy this if you are looking for a good deal.

... entirely sure if this would be something I'd get bored of and give up on
I bought this because I wasn't entirely sure if this would be something I'd get bored of and give up on. I read the reviews and bought this with the idea that it would be something to start with. I was a little excited by the product picture you see online which shows a bare violin, I thought it would be cool to learn how to put everything together. It came put together, which was perfect, the only thing that needed to be assembled was the bridge and strings needed to be tuned. Pushing the nuts into the holes across from them kept the strings tuned. The bridge gave me a heart attack a couple times while tuning it when it snapped flat across the violin which is not a complaint but if this is your first time touching a violin that might happen to you, don't be alarmed. Some (like two) of the hairs of the bow were loose, i pulled them off not knowing what else to do. The absence of those two hairs have not effected my learning. I'm pleased with this purchase so far...even if it broke in half within the next few months, I would still say I'm pleased with this purchase. It was a 30 dollar introduction into learning how the violin works and now I'm dead certain if I shell out for a nicer violin it wont turn into wall decoration or another item in the sale pile.

Im not sure yet if this was a good buy or cheap POS
This looks and feels cheap. I hope it does the job for a first year learner. The case it came in is ripped around the zipper of the small pocket which sucks and you cant take the case apart to sew it.

Not a bad beginner instrument but has some room to improve.
The bridge was not cut so I had to do that myself. Also the tuning pegs would not hold tension. This was due to the fact that they were not through the holes far enough on the other side of the headstock. Pushing them through until the end of the pegs were flush with the holes did the trick. Not a bad beginner instrument but poor instructions regarding setup. The build quality is mediocre at best.
